Chiropractors focus on the nerve system (the brain and spinal cord) which manages the body’s vast chemical interactions to help ensure proper function. The primary means of chiropractic care is the spinal adjustment, a short and painless thrust against the spine using only the doctor’s hands. Spinal adjustments correct vertebral subluxations, which are changes in the position of the spine that do not allow the spine to function properly. When the spine is subluxated, the nerves in that area may behave abnormally and cause pain or other problems. The intent of a spinal adjustment is to restore normal motion, function and nerve impulse flow.
Doctors of chiropractic provide highly specialized care for musculoskeletal conditions and they identify and correct vertebral subluxations. They also serve as teachers as they educate patients about the power of the body to regulate and heal itself. And, they act as coaches who encourage sound health and wellness habits.
Many health care providers face patients who dread coming to their offices, fearful of a painful procedure or suspected bad news about their health. Flexion-Distraction is a technique used to treat vertebral disc injuries and chronic low-back stiffness. We utilize a Hill automatic flexion-distraction table that flexes (bends) the patient’s back while distracting (stretching) the spine. This technique has been clinically proven to successfully treat disc issues such as bulging or herniated disc(s) and degenerative disc disease. However, we prefer to use non-surgical spinal decompression for acute disc patients since it is much more focused in the injured disc and is more effective for immediate pain relief. We use the flexion-distraction technique as a method for maintenance or the occasional disc flare-up injury. The flexion-distraction technique is gentle and effective.
